At this September Equinox, pausing between seasons we ask: What Story Are We Becoming? For many years Integral City has explored how the stories we tell shape the cities and communities we create. Now the invitation feels more intimate: not only to imagine a more alive and regenerative future, but to step into its story — to practise the capacities it asks of us and discover ourselves as Regenerators of the Human Hive.
In this edition of Equinotes, we’ve borrowed the lenses of the Quality of Life Citizen and and explored where has the reader previously imagined, storied and actually rehearsed possible futures? Here are the archives that we have drawn on:
- How Citizens Discover the Complexity of Community reminds us how the Voice of the Citizen is the I and Mind of the city – sharing her subjective experience of the human hive.
- Gaia Mentors Schooling for a Planet of Integral Cities 2121: Imagine Gaia Thrives (2021) uses story and character to enter a future rather than merely describe it.
- Telling We-Stories to Our Future: A Poiesis of Sophrosynes? (2020) by Ian Wight as he imagines us as agents of the generative impulse, telling tales to the future through story, song, dance and poetry.
- Integral City Map 5: Century of Awakening — City/Regions Redeem Anthropocene (2021) imagines entering the future, experiencing it, then discovering what the present must become to get there.
These explorations helped us to imagine the future we want, tell stories that let us enter it, and live now as though that future matters. And finally (as a bonus) we enter the CROFT where Jan, Sasha, Ellie and Rudi walk around inside possible regenerative futures and make choices there as Regenerators. Through them we can imagine practising the future into being.

The Integral City QOL Citizens is the “I” and “mind” of the city.
I want the city to offer me Quality of Life. It would be great if the city could be my community. I seek a neighborhood where differences are easily accepted.
I value my family and friendship bonds. I am tolerant and often seen as a humanitarian. I prefer to make decisions through consensus and I’m great at creating committees so that we can collectively meet the needs of others — both groups and individuals.
I am culturally creative and learn by watching how others act in the moment. I really enjoy living in the present. I like to believe that everyone is equal and we all should be able to live to our highest potential. I am comfortable expressing my feelings and I want others to do so too.
I stand up for the oppressed and fight for human rights and dignity for all.Even after 10 or 20 or 30 years of living to my culturally creative potential, I am often overwhelmed by the sheer weight of my economic and emotional drain. I have paid a lot of my own time, money and effort to care for others — with very little to show in return. Where I expected people to get their act in order and for things to finally get organized, I am constantly frustrated by lack of agreement, dysfunction and disorder.
I would just love to see less chaos and confrontation in the world. Some bottom line results would be nice for a change!! Often these days, I actually find myself longing for some operational efficiency and effectiveness. I know there has to be a bigger picture, a better way.

In this lecture, I want to share a conversation with Gaia herself. She has offered to mentor me about how her Earth cities can evolve maturity and wellbeing.
I opened my third book (Integral City 3.7, Reframing Complex Challenges for Gaia’s Human Hives) with these words:
“How can we design a city for the wellbeing of our granddaughters and future generations in a way that adds value to all Life on Earth?”
That is the question that jet-propels me from my [calm ecovillage in Scotland] to the farthest reaches of the universe and has made me take notice how the discoveries of space pioneers such as Edgar Mitchell astronaut, the Voyageur I and II space exploration program designers, Elisabet Sahtouris evolution biologist and Elon Musk inventor, contribute to designing conditions for optimal human hives.
On this journey I have asked related questions that might reveal the mysteries of living well in cities – How do we wake up the human hive as a whole? Why should I care for her resilient souls, understand the context of people’s goals, develop organizational capacity for critical roles, amplify sustaining energy flows or heal the traumatic impact of warring blows?”

Wrestling with VUCA – Through Placemaking As Wellbeing By Design
This is six in a series of 6 Thought Pieces by Ian Wight exploring his contribution to Urban Hub 20: Accelerating City Transformation in a VUCA World (curated by Marilyn Hamilton, published by Paul van Schaik, (released April 2020).
Through an integral lens we have been exploring the realm of ethos, an inter-personal space, where some practical wisdom might be assayed about how we as a species – in all our inter-subjectivity, might be enabled to achieve greater accord as to how we might fruitfully engage with the challenges of our times. So that we might achieve some ‘we-stories’ – some further evolution stories – that are worth telling to our collective future.
The underlying ethos-making is being conceived in novel ways, that may presage very different future manifestations of what gets consciously presenced (in relation to what is generally absenced). It involves ‘telling a WE-story to the future’. It is a collective, convivial project – for agents in communion (not sole agents, nor solo efforts). As story-telling it is a moral tale. As a ‘making’ endeavour it is a ‘we-design’ project, in a ‘we-zone’, where we try to see with Marcel Proust’s multi-perspectival ‘new eyes’.

How do the 5 Maps used by Integral City make visible the wholeness of the human hive, when we consider Climate Change?
Each of the maps gives us different perspectives to view the patterns of wholeness – through stories. (Moreover, the Integral City maps reveal the consciousness and culture changes that Doughnut Economics depends on to realize AQAL development that brings human systems back into balance with all living systems.)
This is the story of Map 5. (Note its story dateline is in the imaginary future).
The Year 2000 might have commenced the Century named for the City – but the era itself belonged to a much less benign category: the Anthropocene – the time when Earth systems became dominated by human behaviours and their consequences.
At the century’s start, the Rockefeller Foundation announced its commitment to funding 100 cities with Chief Resilience Officers. Parallel to this initiative IBM continued to build out the technology of the Smart City.
